The liver is a large vital organ in the right upper abdomen. Beside the skin it is the only organ in the body that can regenerate itself if there is healthy tissue present. In the case of severe cirrhosis, or scar tissue it cannot. The liver produces bile to aid in digestion of fat, and also acts as a filter for the blood. A liver biopsy is laparoscopic surgery that is done to remove a portion of the liver. This is usually done to get a diagnosis. Often the doctor is trying to determine if there is cirrhosis, or possible cancer present. Bleeding is always risk of surgery, especially in patients with existing liver disease, as one of the liver’s functions is to help with blood clotting.

This procedure is often done at the same time as another procedure, such as a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. This is a surgery to remove the gallbladder, which sits just underneath the liver. It is a fairly simple addition to the procedure. Once the surgery is done you will be discharged home. You will be asked to return to the office for follow up, at which time you will be given the results of your biopsy.
