You might need a lung resection to remove all or part of your lung due to lung cancer or other lung diseases. Our surgeons can usually perform this procedure thoracoscopically, which is a type of minimally invasive surgery of your chest cavity. This approach enables your surgeon to examine the lungs and other structures of the chest without having to make a larger incision. The thoracoscopic approach is much better tolerated and causes patient much less postoperative pain than the old fashioned open approach. Because of this patients tend to return to their normal routine much more quickly.
Prior to having surgery to remove part of your lung you may be asked to have a study to check how well your lungs function. This is done by your pulmonologist in the weeks prior to surgery. Once you have been found to have adequate lung function to tolerate losing a portion of your lung surgery will be scheduled.
During a lung resection you are put under a general anesthetic. Which lets you sleep and keeps you free of pain during the procedure. Several small incisions are made along your side. Your surgeon will insert a tube-like instrument which has a small camera on the end. This camera allows your surgeon to view your lungs on a monitor. Once completed one or more tubes may be temporarily placed in order to drain fluid or air. Your incisions are then closed with sutures.
You can expect to have some discomfort for a few days following your procedure while in the hospital. Once your lung has sealed up the tube either draining fluid or air can be removed. Once removed your skin is closed with non-absorbable sutures which will be removed at your follow up appointment in the office in the weeks coming.
Our surgeons have been successfully performing this surgery with excellent outcomes for years. If you are in need of a lung resection be sure to place yourself in the care of a doctor with the experience and compassion to see you safely through it.
